Piccolo centro, circa 1.800 abitanti, vede spesso il suo nome legato al sisma del 1980, quando il solo crollo della chiesa locale provocò ben 77 morti. Dopo il sisma ricevette la visita di Papa Giovanni Paolo II.
Nonostante il forte terremoto, è tutt’ora possibile ammirare parte del castello Normanno o i numerosi palazzi signorili risalenti al XVII e XVIII secolo, fra cui lo splendido Palazzo Laspro (1750), che ha ospitato Vittorio Emanuele II e la regina Margherita.
Il 13 giugno viene festeggiato Sant’Antonio da Padova.
